All-Access Hour with Emma Raducanu

“One day clay is going to be my surface”

Stuttgart. At the US Open in New York, the Briton Emma Raducanu became the first ever qualifier to win a Grand Slam in summer 2021. This week, the 19-year-old is making her debut at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and is looking forward to the challenge on clay. The Porsche Brand Ambassador spoke about...

...her debut at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix:
“I love to be here. It’s amazing being surrounded by all the Porsches. I had my first hit this morning and I’m looking forward to the week ahead.”

...the Tottenham jersey she was wearing during her first practice session:
“My whole team are basically big Spurs fans and they are desperately trying to get me behind them. I don’t necessarily follow football so much but I am feeling some sort of connection. I loved following the Euros last year and watching Harry Kane, the England captain.”

...the difficulties of playing on clay:
“Game-wise on clay, especially when you’re playing outside, you definitely need to be more patient and build the point. It however takes a lot more energy and physical demand. I think it’s a good lesson for someone who is younger like me to develop more skills and I’m looking forward to spending more time on clay this year. I like sliding and moving on the red clay. The conditions here in the Porsche Arena are a little different than to outdoors but I really like them. I think it is going to be a good surface for me. I keep telling everyone around me that one day clay is going to be my surface and I still believe it.”

…the way she has coped with the increased interest in her person since the US Open win last year:
“Everything has become more busy. I think everything is coming with experience so the more I go out there and play and do the tournament media, the more and more I feel comfortable. It’s obviously going to take time. Every tournament I go to is pretty much a new place. I’m asking where the changing rooms are, the toilets, where the court is, the stringing service. After this year, I’m sure I’ll be more adjusted and accustomed to everything.”

...her German coach Torben Beltz:
“Torben is a great character. He brings a lot of good and happy energy. Though he can be quite strict, he always reminds me that I am doing a good job. His years of experience are helping me to establish myself on the WTA Tour.”

...Torben Beltz’s stories of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix:
“He loves Stuttgart. I’ve heard a lot of great things about this tournament and how they look after the players. And of course it’s his home tournament, so he’s definitely taking a lot of pride in that. We’ve definitely enjoyed it a lot so far.”
